The Five Most Common Drug Addictions

This data comes from people ages 12 and over who sought treatment for substance abuse in recent years. These are the five most prevalent drug addictions reported from those seeking treatment in Texas:

1. Alcohol – With more than 10,000 people reporting addiction to alcohol, it’s the most widely addictive substance in Texas. There’s no doubt that the ease of finding and purchasing alcohol plays a role in how prevalent it is as a drug.

3. Other Opiates – With over 2200 instances of addiction reported in Texas, other opiates such as codeine and morphine were the next most commonly abused. Note that this also includes prescribed opiates such as Fentanyl.

4. Cocaine – As one of the drugs that’s most heavily trafficked across the border, cocaine is a major problem in our communities. Cocaine is a highly addictive substance and over 3000 people reported an addiction to cocaine in 2015.

5. Marijuana – While legal in many other states, marijuana is still highly illegal in Texas. Although many people don’t consider it addictive, more than 7500 people were admitted for marijuana addiction.
